Yokohama relishes Turkish WTCC challenge

Istanbul Speed Track’s turn eight is infamous amongst the world’s greatest drivers, but Yokohama Advan believes it has the solution for the FIA World Touring Car Championship this weekend.

The tyre supplier, now confirmed for 2007, has already demonstrated its high-traction capabilities in its first year of WTCC, which should be invaluable at the eighth corner where the likes of Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen have already slipped up.

“Our product has been delivering consistent performance for both front wheel and rear wheel drive cars,” said Yokohama Europe’s Marketing Manager, Kazuyoshi Sekiguchi. “Istanbul is a very exciting and challenging race track and it is very tough for the cars, drivers and the tyres. I think the one who finds the best set up for the car and the tyres will win the race.”

Turn eight, a 250kph triple-apex left-hander, requires the drivers’ undivided attention as the slightest mistake could cost valuable time.

“It is quite famous and it’s probably my favourite part of the track,” said SEAT Driver Gabriele Tarquini. “It’s a long corner, very fast, before a straight. It’s very unusual and you have to get it absolutely right.”

Andy Priaulx shares the Italian’s opinion: “It’s a special challenge,” said the reigning champion. “Everybody is talking about it. You’ve got to get the car working through this corner.”

The WTCC competition is closer than ever, with the Priauxl and BMW back in the lead but once again carrying a maximum ballast of 80kg.

Challenger James Thomson will be hoping for better form after a disastrous weekend in Brno lost him the championship lead. The SEAT driver will be making the most of his reduced ballast weight now only 50kg.
