Plains sailing for Carwyn
18 year old Llandysul driver Carwyn Harries was on top form this weekend in Mid Wales. Driving his Matador Tyres backed Suzuki Ignis 1400, the young Welshman was a convincing winner of the 1400 category on the Plains Rally, based in Welshpool. The result marked Carwyn's second overall victory within the Xspec BTRDA 1400 National Rally Championship this season.Partnered by Carmarthen's Gareth Roberts, the pair headed to the event feeling a little out of practice after an early retirement on the Woodpecker Rally recently. The ex-James Wozencroft Suzuki had recently been converted back to its former 'wide track' set up, making the car much more stable in the high speed corners. A test prior to the event with Matador Tyres boss Graham Middleton had improved the car, and Harries was keen to get off to a good start in the forests near to Bala and Dolgellau.A wrong tyre choice didn't help matters, as young Scottish driver David Bogie put in an impressive performance initially. Unfortunately the young Scot was not destined to remain in the rally long, and soon retired. Harries, now using the more suitable Matador SM-4 gravel tyre, was finding things much easier. The handling of the Ignis was more to his liking, and running first on the road was also a new experience for the Welsh teenager.Backed by Harries Embroidered Clothing, Carwyn produced a string of fastest times to open up a huge gap over his closest rival. A near two minute gap was achieved after the Gartheiniog stage, and with one small 'super special' stage to contest near to Welshpool, it was looking good for Carwyn and Gareth. The joy of victory so nearly became the pain of despair for the crew. A driveshaft broke halfway through the 1.3 mile test. The Ignis was able to slowly limp out of the stage, but the time lost was irrelevant. With such a large lead going into the stage, the crew were able to get the offending item changed immediately afterwards, and they then made their way to the rally finish to celebrate a fine victory. Harries was delighted with the win:'I must say a big thank you to everyone who has helped us in what has been a difficult season' said Carwyn. 'Harries Embroidered Clothing have been a fantastic sponsor, and my service crew have been brilliant as well. I would also like to thank Graham and Craig Middleton and everyone at Matador Tyres for their support. The tyres have been brilliant, and the SM-4 tyre we used on the Plains worked perfectly. The car felt really good once we had changed over to them, and then we had a really positive attack through the stages. I was really pleased with everything, and even the driveshaft breaking on the last stage couldn't stop us from smiling! We need to spend a bit more time testing and setting up the car before the final event of the year, but I think we'll be able to get a lot more from the car when we do'.Harries will look to end the season on a high on the Cambrian Rally. The final round of the BTRDA National Rally Championship takes place in Llandudno on November 4th, and uses the famous Great Orme tarmac stage. The rally then heads south to the forests of Clocaenog and Penmachno where the real action begins. Harries and Roberts will look to end a season of ups and downs in style as they aim for another 1400 class win.
