Final flourish for Bullish Kevin
Kevin Davies heads to Oswestry next Saturday (October 21st) determined to end his second season of championship rallying on a high. The 21 year old from Llanfihangel-ar-Arth near Llandysul has produced a string of impressive performances throughout 2006, and the Bulldog Clubmans Rally marks the final round of the Fiesta SportingTrophy this year.No longer able to win the title, Davies will instead concentrate on doing his utmost to take victory on one of the more popular events in the UK rallying calendar. Using the challenging forests of Dyfi, Gartheiniog and Dyfnant, the event promises to be a titanic end of season battle. The destiny of the championship trophy will be decided between Chris Moore and George Thomas, who have a straight fight for victory. For Davies, the event will be a good warm up prior to the challenges of Wales Rally GB in December, and he will once again be partnered by the vastly experienced Newtown based co-driver, Shaun O'Gorman.Backed by KJ's Eden Tours, David Harries and Co and MM Ford of Aberystwyth, Davies can look back with pride on an excellent debut season with the M-Sport run series. Starting as a relative newcomer with just one years rallying under his belt, Davies led the series for nearly half the year. His consistency brought dividends, and on two occasions just seconds stood between Kevin and the top step of the podium. Mechanical misfortune would also play a part in Davies losing out on the chance to win the title, but having made an excellent impression on those within the series, Davies is content with his level of progress this year. The Bulldog Rally will certainly pose a challenge to the MSA British Rally Elite Academy member. Davies has been training hard in the gym in readiness for some long stages - ideal preparation for his second World Rally Championship outing later in the year. The www.rallycarsales.net and X-Cite Motorsport Supplies backed Ford Fiesta ST150 is fresh from its last outing in Scotland, and Kevin is eager to get going on Welsh soil again:"I know the stages reasonably well, as I've done a few rallies in North and Mid Wales now" said Davies. "The stages are fast and quite hilly, so you need to be brave. There are quite a few drops in places too, so don't look down! I'm feeling confident going into the event, as I know that if we drive to our normal speed, we can be well on the pace. I've no doubt that Chris (Moore) and George (Thomas) will be really going at it, but you've also got the likes of Simon Hughes and Tom Walster who will all be pushing hard to win the final round. I'd love to end the season with a win, as I've come so close to winning a couple of times this year. It all looks set for a really tough battle, and that is something I always look forward to. It is also a good 'test' for our preparations for Wales Rally GB, which are going very well".Davies will be under the glare of the media spotlight when Wales Rally GB kicks off. The young Welshman will be driving the 'Art Car' on the event. A nationwide competition was recently launched where school kids from across the UK could design the livery of Davies' car on the event. Backed by the Welsh Assembly Government and the likes of Ford, the all new design will be launched at the pre-event 'Happy Hour', just before the main the event kicks off in South Wales.
