Faulkner heads Carrera Cup testing

Damien Faulkner set the pace in testing ahead of rounds 19 and 20 of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Silverstone yesterday, and with a second and a half covering the top 17 cars, the stage is set for some great racing to wrap up the season. With the start of testing delayed due to fog, the 21-strong Carrera Cup field had two 35-minute sessions on the National circuit. By the end of the second session, newly crowned champion Faulkner (Team Parker with SAS) headed the times by 16-hundredths of a second. “It was a bit of a scrappy session with all the traffic, but I’m happy to finish up there,” said Faulkner.Right behind was James Pickford (IN2RACING), who also found the short lap crowded with a 21-car field. “My fastest time was going up the inside of a couple of people,” he reported. “The car feels great and the IN2 guys have done a great job.” Danny Watts (Team IRWIN with Red Line) was third quickest after a trouble free day at his home track, while Tim Harvey Motorbase Performance) was fourth best. Harvey was also pleased to be the fastest of the drivers not to use new tyres during testing.“The car felt a lot better this afternoon, so I’m happy with that,” said Harvey, who needs two reasonable finishes to make certain of the runner-up slot in the final championship standings. Right behind Harvey was his team mate Phil Quaife, who headed the pro-am times in an impressive fifth fastest overall. “I’m very pleased with that session,” confirmed Quaife. “We made some changes after the first session and it was certainly the right thing to do.”Equally impressive on his Carrera Cup debut was Andy Demetriou, who posted sixth fastest time for the Tech 9 team. Despite a quick spin into the gravel at Brooklands, Demetriou proved immediately quick and almost matched Quaife in the pro-am category. “Today was an acid test for me, and that’s the best that we could realistically aim for,” he said.Michael Caine (Motorbase Performance), Jason Templeman (Team Parker with SAS) and pro-am racer Sam Edwards (Team Parker Racing) were all right on the pace in a very closely-matched top 10, while tenth fastest was Phil Hindley (Tech 9 Motorsport) despite very limited seat time in recent months. So competitive was the field, that even though they lapped within a second of Faulkner’s best, IN2RACING’s Mike Richards and Richard Williams were just outside the top 10 as Andy Purdie (RH Motorsport with Paragon) and Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing) wrapped up the top six pro-am category drivers.Leading times:1 Damien Faulkner (Team Parker with SAS)          57.695s2 James Pickford (IN2RACING with totalamber) 57.855s3 Danny Watts (Team IRWIN with Red Line)          57.897s4 Tim Harvey (Motorbase Performance)                  57.965s5 Phil Quaife (Motorbase Performance)                  58.023s6 Andy Demetriou (Tech 9 Motorsport)             58.046s7 Michael Caine (Motorbase Performance)          58.083s8 Jason Templeman (Team Parker with SAS)          58.142s9 Sam Edwards (Team Parker Racing)                   58.237s10 Phil Hindley (Tech 9 Motorsport)             58.269s
