Watts takes Carrera Cup pole at Silverst

Danny Watts swept to pole position for round 19 of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Silverstone today (Saturday, 14 October), but with only a quarter of a second covering the top five cars, the stage is set for a tremendous race later in the afternoon.Watts (Team IRWIN with Red Line) jumped to the top of the times to depose Jason Templeman (Team Parker with SAS), after Templeman had held the top slot for much of the session. “It just turned around from testing yesterday,” said Templeman of his time, which he achieved after only seven laps. “I’ve got a good set of tyres for the race,” he added after his best qualifying run of the season.Only 31-thousandths of a second covered the top three cars as James Pickford (IN2RACING) almost matched the times of Watts and Templeman. The situation might have changed in the final five minutes, but a spin into the gravel at Woodcote by Mike Richards (IN2RACING) caused the session to be halted early. Richards just got a wheel onto the grass on the exit of Luffield and spun to a halt in the gravel, without any damage to the car. In all, the top 13 drivers lapped inside the existing lap record.Newly crowned champion Damien Faulkner (Team Parker with SAS) was disappointed to qualify fourth, but was only 16-hundredths of a second away from pole. “There was nothing more I could have done,” reckoned Damien. Just behind Faulkner were three cars from Motorbase Performance, as Tim Harvey, Michael Caine and Phil Quaife all qualified strongly. “I’m a bit disappointed, really,” said Harvey. “A bit of traffic, then a yellow flag, then a red flag! You just needed to be a bit lucky to get a clear lap,” he said. The times were just as close in the pro-am category, with Quaife, Sam Edwards (Team Parker Racing) and Carrera Cup newcomer Andy Demetriou (Team 9 Motorsport covered by a tenth of a second. However, Quaife’s qualifying times were later disallowed for a flag infringement and so he will start the race from the back of the grid.Right in touch with the top pro-am cars were Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing) and Andy Purdie (RH Motorsport with Paragon), as Richard Williams (IN2RACING) completed the top 12.Further back, Vicki Butler-Henderson continued to learn about the latest Carrera Cup car as she drove the Vertu-backed VIP car. “They’ve all instantly become my heroes,” she said of the Carrera Cup drivers, having pushed very hard just to stay in touch with the rest of the pack.Leading times:1 Danny Watts (Team IRWIN with Red Line)          57.387s2 Jason Templeman (Team Parker with SAS)          57.412s3 James Pickford (IN2RACING with totalamber)   57.418s4 Damien Faulkner (Team Parker with SAS)          57.547s5 Tim Harvey (Motorbase Performance)                  57.631s6 Michael Caine (Motorbase Performance)          57.780s7 Sam Edwards (Team Parker Racing)                   58.024s8 Andy Demetriou (Tech 9 Motorsport)             58.083s9 Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing)                             58.137s10 Andy Purdie (RH Motorsport with Paragon)          58.227s
