As 70 companies line up in the dash for the Irish speed camera cash, who would dare deny that 'it's about the money'?
Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign(www.safespeed.org.uk) said: "Make no mistake - speed cameras are big business- in fact if it wasn't for commercial interests they would never even have been developed in the first place."
"Speed cameras in the UK have proved to be a massive blunder that has made road safety worse. Neither road deaths nor hospitalisations have fallen significantly for a decade and they should have done because engineering safety improvements are much bigger than the growth in traffic. The problem is that the side effects of speed cameras - and the oversimplified messages that come with them - are quite simply making drivers worse."
"I urge the Irish government to scrap their speed camera plans before it's too late."
