VX Racing’s Tom Chilton guest of honour at British Schools Karting Championship Final
Vauxhall’s Tom Chilton – the British Touring Car Championship’s youngest-ever race winner – will be talking to the sport’s next generation at a National karting final next week.
The 21-year-old VX Racing driver will be handing out awards at the British School Karting Championship, before challenging the winners to a ‘race off’.
“It has been a while since I have raced in a kart and it will be interesting as the kids will probably fly by me as I am much heavier than them,” said Tom, who has also enjoyed great success in international GT racing. “I am sure it will be great fun and I look forward to meeting the kids.”
The championship, launched at the end of 2006, has captured the imagination of hundreds of school kids across the capital and the motorsport industry as well.
Vauxhall is one of many motorsport outfits which have donated prizes to the top winning teams. VX Racing’s driver for the 2007 season, Chilton will be offering driving tips to the young competitors, presenting the prizes at the podium ceremony and challenge the winners to a quick karting race.
Championship organiser, Will Tew said that it's always been his dream to make motorsport accessible to everyone. "I've loved motorsport ever since I was a kid,” he said. “I would have loved to have had the opportunity to go racing when I was at school but there was nothing in place to allow that to happen without spending thousands of pounds.”
“The British Schools Karting Championship changes all that. It's just fantastic. The kids have had a wicked time and all the teachers are happy. I can't wait to see who will win the final; there is some incredible talent there."
British Schools Karting Championship, which costs just £55 to enter, is designed to make motorsport more accessible to kids.
“I wish they would let me race my VXR Vectra as I would stand a better chance of winning,” Chilton said. “Maybe when the kids are older we have a rematch.”
The final will be taking place at Streatham Kart Raceway, London, on the evening of Monday 26 February from 6pm until 10pm. There will be an official photographer on site. All press and media are welcome.
