Jordan stars in Clio opener
Andrew Jordan produced a superb performance to finish second overall in the opening round of the 2007 Elf Renault Clio Cup at Brand Hatch (Sunday 1 April). From a field of over 40 identical Clios, 17-year old Andrew raced with speed and maturity to avoid any of the dramas that befell some of the title contenders to finish second in the main race on Sunday. He had already qualified on pole position and taken second place during his heat on Saturday in the Team Eurotech entry. Andrew's performance in his John Guest-backed Clio earned him the Atol Fuel Driver of the Day award. "I really couldn’t have asked for any more today. I was thinking before the race that a top-six finish would have been good so this is amazing. It was a planned move on Martin Byford because I think he was struggling with his tyres so even though he squeezed me I was able to force him wide on the exit of Clearways and keep ahead at Paddock Hill Bend."On Saturday, the 43-car field was whittled down to 32 cars for the all-important final on Sunday and Andrew raced to second place behind Byford. "I was probably just a little too cautious on cold tyres on the first lap, but second was a great result. I certainly felt we had the pace," said Andrew after the heat.On Sunday, in front of a huge crowd and live TV cameras, Andrew held fourth place off the line and was quickly into third and chasing Ed Pead and Byford. While Pead started to edge away, Andrew clearly had better pace than Byford and moved ahead with a classic Brands Hatch passing move that started at Clearways and ended at Paddock Hill Bend.Once ahead of Byford, he pulled clear and set about closing the gap to race leader Pead. However, by now the best was gone from his tyres and Andrew settled for a secure second place to get his Renault Clio campaign off to a brilliant start.Andrew Jordan is supported by John Guest, Bill Gwynne Rally School and Pirtek.
