Sam Bird selected for MSA Race Elite

Sam Bird (20, Claygate) has been chosen as one of only six young racing drivers in the UK to win a place on the inaugural MSA Race Elite programme.

The Motor Sports Association, the governing body of UK Motorsport, announced the scheme at Autosport International in January this year. and invited entries from young British drivers aged between 16 and 25 from all motor sport disciplines.

The programme will be operated by the Brabham Performance Clinic, fronted by one of the world’s foremost international racing drivers, David Brabham, in conjunction with mind coach and sponsorship guru Don Macpherson.

The scheme attracted almost 100 entries from competitors at all levels of British motorsport, from junior single seater formulae, through to sports cars, touring cars and up to and including Formula 3.  A short list of 20 was drawn up, from which a panel of experts chose the final six.

The programme will cover all areas of physical and mental preparation and training, track performance and development, technical and engineering awareness in areas such as engine, gearbox, suspension, tyres, electronics and aerodynamics. It will also bring in experts to advise on career management, media, sponsorship and promotional training.

“The standard of entrants was extremely high” said David Brabham “and the judges had to select those drivers who they believed would benefit most from the programme and who had the ability to step up the racing ladder to the highest levels.  Today’s driver has to navigate all these aspects without any formal training.  We hope to bridge that gap and provide the training for those we believe to have the talent and skills to fulfil their potential”

“I’m thrilled” said Sam  “this scheme will help me and future candidates to navigate the minefield that is modern motor racing.  Knowing just what is necessary to achieve my own full potential, in mental and physical training, in management and sponsorship, engineering and technology as well as the next logical career step will be a huge leg up for me and other young drivers trying to make their way in motor racing today.  I am very grateful for this opportunity”
