Harris Leads Championship
Harris Leads Championship after Successful Easter WeekendA superb opening weekend sees Hampshire racer Matt Harris and his team-mate sitting at the top of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship points table after winning the second of the weekend's two races at Oulton Park, Cheshire, this Bank Holiday Monday. Sharing a Porsche 997 GT3 with Oliver Bryant, the two claimed fourth in the opening one-hour race on Saturday (April 7th) before overcoming tricky track conditions to lead the field home in round two.Matt, from Droxford, near Southampton, is in his second season in the competitive championship - the UK's leading sportscar series - driving the potent Porsche for Team RPM. The rapid racer now shares top spot in the points table with team-mate Oliver - the pair three points clear of their closest rival and leading the pick of the UK's GT racers."In race one Ollie started fourth on the grid," said 21-year-old Matt, "and we knew if he stayed near the front we could have a chance of a good result. He did really well, and we managed the quickest pit-stop of the entire field so that I rejoined the race in second place."I soon had a really quick Ferrari right behind me and I was forced to be defensive to keep him behind, as well as trying to close on the Aston Martin that was leading. Being so defensive fried my rear tyres, and when the Ferrari got past I also lost a couple more places and we finally had to settle for fourth. It was disappointing, as we knew a podium finish had been there for us."I started Monday's race sixth on the grid, with two Ferraris at the front and I was soon battling for position behind them. There was an early Safety Car period that slowed everyone for a few laps, and on the re-start I was able to get cleanly inside an Ascari into the first corner. I left him room, but he stilled turned in and we touched - he spun but I got away with just a few scratches."I was then chasing an Aston Martin when it started to drizzle, conditions were really difficult and changing lap-by-lap, making it one of the most difficult races I have ever had. I kept plugging away and we were the last of the front-runners to pit, so we were leading when I went in to hand over the car. We had made up ground as the others pitted and handed over to their second drivers, and the team gambled on keeping our Porsche on slick tyres, hoping conditions would not worsen."Ollie did a brilliant job and despite an Aston Martin closing in the final laps we held on to win and lead the championship, which is exactly where we wanted to be. Realistically we couldn't have asked for any more from the weekend, and I can't wait now for the next race."Next rounds of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship will be held at Donington Park, East Midlands, on April 21st / 22nd, the series going on to visit all of the UK's leading circuits.
