Harvey tops Carrera Cup test at Thruxton

Harvey tops Carrera Cup test at ThruxtonTim Harvey was again in stunning form as he topped the times in testing for the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Thruxton on Wednesday (11 April). However, the championship leader had to push hard on new tyres right at the end of the day to keep ahead of Sam Hancock and James Sutton. The two 40-minute test sessions were for rounds 5 and 6 of the championship, which run at the high speed Hampshire track over the weekend of 5/6 May. Harvey (Red Line Racing) generally set the pace, but came under attack in the closing stages of the afternoon test. However, a late run on new tyres was perfectly judged, and Harvey moved back to the head of the times. "Sam and James are getting quicker," said Harvey. "The car felt good, so I just had to go out and do it. It was important to try new tyres so that we know what we are going into in qualifying."Second fastest for Hancock (Motorbase Performance) was an excellent result on his first drive at Thruxton for nearly a decade. He'd run round the track early in the morning with his younger brother Olly, an instructor at Thruxton, to refresh his memory. "We deliberately came into today not getting caught up chasing lap times," said Hancock. "I'd like to think there is more to come."Sutton (Red Line Racing) was equally impressive with a best time two-hundredths of a second behind Hancock. "It’s a lot closer," said Sutton. "I didn't like the circuit this morning, but in the afternoon I really started to get a feel for it." Michael Caine was fourth fastest for Team Parker Racing, just ahead of a strong showing from Matt Howson in the Porsche Motorsport entry. Making his debut in anything other than a single-seater, Howson impressed with his approach and his speed. "I just did what I was told and I'm really pleased to be in the top six. I've got a lot of respect for these guys now!"Rob Collard (Team Parker Racing) continued his learning process in a Porsche to be sixth from Steven Kane (Motorbase Performance), while Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing) headed the pro-am times in a strong eighth fastest overall. "That's been a good day and I did the time on old rubber," said Rice. James Pickford (QME Engineering) was held back in ninth with some technical problems, while Andy Britnell (Motorbase Performance) was tenth overall and second in pro-am. Just outside the top 10 came encouraging performances from Pete Osborne (Team O) and Colin Willmott (Team TWC), while Charles Bateman (Team Parker Racing) and Peter Bamford (RPM) concentrated on learning the circuit on their first experience of Thruxton.
