Kirkaldy for Rockingham Carrera Cup
Andrew Kirkaldy, one of Britain's best sports and GT racers, will make his Porsche Carrera Cup GB debut at Rockingham this weekend (21/22 April) in rounds three and four of the championship. Kirkaldy will race the Porsche Motorsport entry as part of the strong links between the Carrera Cup and the McLaren/Autosport/BRDC Young Driver Award. While the six finalists in the 2006 young driver award will all have the chance to race in the Carrera Cup this season, 1997 young driver winner Kirkaldy has been invited to take up one of the other race weekends.Although he has never raced a Porsche before, or competed on the road circuit at Rockingham, Kirkaldy is looking forward to the experience and hopes that his extensive GT experience will serve him well."At least I get the chance to drive the car before qualifying," said Kirkaldy. "I've never driven a Supercup car before, but talking to other people I'm told that the cars are good to drive. I'm sure it will take a little getting used to, but I'm pretty used to jumping into different cars at new circuits. I'm looking forward to it and it's going to be a busy weekend. But we'll give it a go."Kirkaldy started karting in 1989 and progressed up the single-seater ladder to win the prestigious 'young driver' award in 1997. He later raced in Formula 3 and tested for several F1 teams. In 2002 he had his first GT race and has since enjoyed great success in British GT, FIA GT and at Le Mans. In 2006, he claimed eight pole positions in the FIA GT Championship and scored a podium finish at Le Mans.
