Mike Jordan scored a win and a second place in the Independents' Trophy during two dramatic races in the 2007 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Rockingham on Sunday.Despite starting only 12th after a starter motor problem in qualifying, Jordan's Team Eurotech Honda Integra finished a fighting sixth in the opening race and later claimed eighth place from the back of the grid in the third race.In front of a packed crowd at the spectacular Rockingham track, the John Guest Speedfit Honda won the Independents' Trophy in the first race and could have challenged for an overall podium finish in the second race had Mike not been taken out of the race on the opening lap."The balance of the car is very, very good," reported Mike after free practice. "We're in good shape." He said. However, after just six laps in qualifying to warm the tyres up, Mike pitted to have tyres switched round and the car simply refused to re-start. "I was convinced we'd got at least a top five car for qualifying," he said. But, frustratingly, he was left to start the first race from 12th place."I made my best ever start in the first race and I went between the Motorbase SEATs before they'd even moved!" Into ninth on the opening lap, Mike charged up to the tail of a four-car battle for fourth place. However, he was stuck behind the defensive BMW of Mat Jackson for several laps, and once he had gone ahead, there was not enough time to climb any higher than sixth. Being the first Independent ensured a visit to the podium. "We also set the fastest Independent lap of the day."In race two, the Honda was out-gunned off the line by the BMWs and was in the thick of a big scrum of cars on the opening lap. "I just knew it was going to kick off," said Mike, who was turned sideways when hit by the Alfa Romeo of Eoin Murray. "I was looking out the passenger window at Murray and I could hear his engine on the rev limiter as he tried to turn me round," said Mike later, after retiring with broken rear suspension. He managed to drag the battered car back to the pits to give the team as much time as possible to repair the damage before the third race, but the cars were on the grid by the time the Eurotech Honda was pushed out of the garage. To a big cheer from the packed grandstands, Mike started the race from the pit lane, but the car's suspension set-up was far from perfect after the hectic repairs."I didn’t know what the car would be like. In fact, it was a bit like a rally car on the brakes and was going sideways, but once I got used to it, it was okay." To compound the problems, a broken exhaust was a legacy of the earlier tangle and later in the race a front roll bar failed.Undaunted, Mike quickly started scything past the backmarkers and a mid-race safety car period worked perfectly as it allowed him to close onto the tail of the leading pack. "I prayed for a safety car and it worked. When we re-started, there was Eion Murray in front of me!" Mike was not about to hang around behind the Alfa Romeo and went ahead with a forceful move at the Tarzan hairpin. "I was determined to get by everybody," he said after finishing a fighting eighth with one of the best drives of the day. "That was everything I'd got!"
