Superb field for Heritage at A1 GP
A superb 40-car field will line up for the next pair of races in the 2007 Charterhouse Heritage GT Car Challenge as the series has one of its most prestigious dates of the year at the A1 GP meeting at Brands Hatch this weekend (28/29 April).A tremendous grid of racing GT and saloon cars from the 1960s and 1970s will do battle over a pair of races on the stunning Grand Prix circuit, with two drivers in many of the cars and compulsory pit stops adding to the excitement. The weekend's schedule includes a 40-minute race on Saturday afternoon and a 35-minute race on Sunday afternoon. These cars are from an era when power invariably exceeded grip, and with many cars running 4-litre, 5-litre and even 6-litre engines, cars sliding around is the norm in Heritage races. Add in the spectacle of some of the rapid smaller cars trying to do some giant killing and you have all the ingredients for two real crowd-pleasers.One of the cars to beat, and a winner here last autumn, is the Chevrolet Camaro of Peter Hall and multiple BTCC champion Andy Rouse. They started their season in superb style at Donington Park last weekend with a double victory and could make it four from four at Brands. At Donington, the mighty Camaro had to fend off a fierce challenge from the Morgan +8 of Rick Lloyd and it is the Morgan of father and son team Grahame and Oliver Bryant that could be the biggest threat to Hall and Rouse at Brands. The Chevrolet Camaro of Andy Jenkinson/John Young will be another podium contender, while Irish racer Jackie Cochrane brings his Sunbeam Tiger to the Heritage series for the first time, with rising saloon car ace Stephen Colbert sharing the driving duties.Notable among the Aston Martin pack will be the thundering V8s of Chris Scragg/John Bussell and Bob Searles/Tony Jardine, while the older DB4 of British GT racers Tom Alexander/Michael Bentwood will fly. But the cars that could be the biggest contenders for overall victory are the MGB GTV8 of father and son team Roy and Russell McCarthy and several more Morgan +8s. Peter Horsman/Nigel Hulme will be quick and Phil Hollins has enlisted the services of former BTCC champion Tim Harvey to share his +8. In class B, for the mildly modified cars, the Morgan +8 of Tony Lees could earn more glory for the Malvern marque after taking a class victory at Donington, but the thundering TVR Griffith of Jamie Boot and the superb Lotus 47 of Pat Thomas will be other leading contenders. Meanwhile, former TVR works GT racer Michael Caine will make his classic racing debut by sharing the Lotus Elan of Paul Tooms. In class A for the classic saloon cars, the mighty Ford Anglia of local ace Gordon Streeter will be chasing victory, but it was the Mini Cooper S of Harvey and Clive Death that won twice in fine style at Donington. With a bumper crowd expected at Brands for the final races of the A1 GP season, a whole new audience will be treated to some great Heritage GT action. It promises to be a great weekend for the teams and drivers.
