Sebastian Vettel (RC Motorsport) clocked the best time on the second day of collective testing at the Magny-Cours circuit. Miguel Molina (Pons Racing) and Alvaro Parente (Tech 1 Racing) took the second and third best times respectively behind the German driver, while Filipe Albuquerque and the Epsilon-Euskadi team were in better spirits again as they claimed the day's fourth-fastest time. Drenched by overnight showers, the track had dried out almost completely by the start of the morning session. As has often been the case so far this season, Alvaro Parente (Tech 1 Racing) clocked the best time before lunch. With a time of 1'25''065, the Portuguese driver eclipsed yesterday's quickest time of 1'25''248, set by Clivio Piccione (RC Motorsport). "And yet I only used fresh tyres for one lap. I could have done better still. In any case, I'm satisfied with everything we've tried out on the car over the two days," declared the championship leader.
Once again, the track at Nevers got quicker in the afternoon session as the temperature rose. With a new engine fitted to his Formula Renault 3.5 by Carlin Motorsport's mechanics – the old one had reached the authorized mileage limit – Sebastian Vettel could not be seen for dust as he went round the circuit in 1'24''500: "It was a good lap, but it wasn't perfect, because I couldn't put my best three splits together. Everything went well even though I haven't driven here very much. That augurs well for the Nürburgring.»
Disqualified yesterday for having too light a car, Miguel Molina reminded everyone of his talents by claiming the second-fastest time of the day, less than a tenth of a second behind Vettel: "Getting good times is nice, but the really important thing is to work on your setup. In that respect, I know that we'll be taking a good car to the Nürburgring."
With the fourth-fastest time of the day, Filipe Albuquerque was all smiles again after a difficult weekend at Monza: "We worked well throughout the two days, even if it didn't always show on the time sheets. We waited until the start of the afternoon session to put on fresh tyres. There are still a few little things for us to improve, but the car is great. I'm feeling more confident and I know that I can try more things when I'm driving."
Another driver to resurface today after a disappointing weekend at Monza was Ben Hanley (Prema Power Team), who clocked the eighth-best time behind Van der Garde, Duran and Risatti: "Monza was a very difficult weekend. I had gearbox trouble in race 1, which meant I had to start from the back of the grid the next day. I'm pleased with the improvement we've shown today. I'm still sixth tenths of a second behind the quickest driver, but yesterday the gap was over a second. The car is better now and we were in good shape at the Nürburgring tests, so I'm confident about the coming weekend."
Andy Soucek, who finished fourth in the 2005 championship, made a one-off return to the Interwetten.com team: "I was interested in doing some tests on this circuit with a view to the GP2 races here. It was great to see the team and all the World Series drivers again. As usual I really enjoyed myself in the car, and I was able to give my opinion on the setup. The engineers can use the data collected to work with the lead drivers."
