Jordan takes BTCC podium at Thruxton
Mike Jordan was one of the stars of the weekend in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Thruxton (Hampshire) over the weekend of 5/6 May, taking a third and a fourth place and moving to the head of the Independents' Trophy points.Jordan's John Guest Speedfit-backed Honda Integra was bang on the leading pace all weekend and was only denied second place in the opening race when a front tyre punctured. "It was a very good performance all round," said Mike after again showing that he can race with the very best of the works teams and drivers. In qualifying, Mike was just a fifth of a second away from pole position in third place. His best lap time in the Team Eurotech Honda Integra was only bettered by the works cars of Fabrizio Giovanardi and Darren Turner."I'm delighted with that," said Mike. "We knew from the Integra’s results from the last two years with Team Halfords that it’s a beauty at Thruxton and it was down to me to do the rest. I knew from free practice that we were there or thereabouts on pace," added Mike.In the first race, he ran sixth on the opening lap but rapidly picked off Jason Plato, Colin Turkington, Darren Turner and Tom Chilton to race into second place, with only Fabrizio Giovanardi ahead. However, on the 16th and final lap his front left tyre punctured half a lap from the flag and Mike had to limp around and finish tenth."We tried to be fairly conservative with our set-up, but we were still hurting the front left tyre," said Mike. "I thought we could get to the end. For the second race we really loosened the back end and it was more like driving a rally car! It was sideways everywhere to try and get the load off the front left tyre."Despite the car's handling, Mike fought up the pack from tenth and got into fourth place with four laps to go. With the experience of the first race in his mind, Mike then decided not to chase after the three leaders and settled for a secure fourth."When I got through to fourth, I said to the guys on the radio that we should just take that. It's not my style, but I decided to stay where we were rather than risk another tyre. When we saw the condition of the tyre at the end of the second race I knew I could push harder in the third race."Sure enough, in race three Mike was again bang on the pace and finished a brilliant third in front of the live TV cameras to round out a memorable day. "Mid-race I thought I could catch Jason Plato, but I'd worked the tyres really hard chasing Jason and so I backed it off over the last couple of laps."The Thruxton results have put Mike into the lead of the Independents' Trophy as the BTCC goes into a four-week break before the action resumes at Croft on 2/3 June.
