TEAM IRWIN had a weekend of mixed fortunes in the third round of the 2007 Porsche Mobil1 Supercup season, taking 14th place in Spain in a highly competitive field of 32 cars.
The Gran Premio de Espana took place in Barcelona between 11-13 May, with driver David Saelens working hard to add five points to his championship total after an eventful weekend on the track.
It started well, with Saelens the second quickest around the Circuit de Catalunya on the first day of practice. But in the qualifying session he was involved in an unfortunate incident with another vehicle, which limited the TEAM IRWIN to 15th place on the grid.
In the blistering heat of the race he got off to a great start, picking up four places on the opening lap. But a minor collision with a rookie driver affected the handling and Saelens used all his skill to get the car home in in 14th position, and remain in the points.
He said: “It was pretty tough today, sometimes things don’t go your way. The team put together a great car for the race and I showed what we’re capable of straight from the start. Unfortunately, one of the junior drivers showed a bit of inexperience and we couldn’t avoid each other. I’m looking forward to the next challenge in two weeks time and have a podium finish for TEAM IRWIN SAS in my sights.”
The next round is the world famous Grand Prix de Monaco, which takes place between 25 – 27 May in Monte-Carlo. You’ll be able to watch the race live on Eurosport at 09.00 (UK time) on 27 May.
