Silverstone this weekend sees races five and six in the 2007 Apex Tubulars Porsche Club Championship, with already the season shaping up to be a good one with large grids and some great racing. James Neal has won three of the four races so far, but only bad luck has denied Tom Segrue victory in his new 968 CS.
While the racers at the front will be battling for outright honours, the overall champion can come from any class so the action should be close all down the field. Classes are divided by power-to-weight ratio, so some of the latest Porsche models can be seen dicing with potent Porsches of an older vintage round Silverstone's National circuit layout.
Neal won both the opening races at Oulton Park in his Class One 964, defending all the way in race one before being headed over the line in the second race by Segrue, who then had his start adjudged a tad too quick and was dropped to third in the results.
A week later at Snetterton Neal again took the first race, but Sunday's race saw Mark McAleer take his first win of the year. Segrue was a front-runner in both races, late race contact with other cars denting his hopes.
In Class Two Marcus Carniel won both Oulton races, only for former class winner Richard Lambert to take both wins on a one-off appearance at Snetterton. On the pace after a long motorsport layoff has been Trevor Lewis, who took second in Class Two after a long battle with Lambert.
Neil Harvey doubled up at Oulton in Class Three, while Mark Taylor took both Class Three wins at Snetterton on his series debut.
It will be a busy Sunday for the Porsche Club Championship races this weekend with a qualifying session and two races in the one day. Qualifying is at 09.00 with the first of the two 30-minute races at 11.40 and the second at 14.00.
