Porsche Open visits Silverstone

The Apex Tubulars Porsche Open series provides a home for some of the most exciting Porsches racing anywhere in the UK - and this weekend at Silverstone will be no exception. The battle at the front of the field features some ferociously-powerful machinery taking on the latest 997 GT3 models, a classic duel of power versus handling around the Silverstone National circuit.

Over 35-drivers have registered for the Open, which is a series of races with no overall points structure or champion. Class Two is the only one with points to be won, the leading eligible 996 GT3 driver winning a prize drive in the 2008 Porsche Carrera Cup at a TOCA meeting. Silverstone's race will be a one-hour event, giving the regulars the option of bringing in a second driver or driving solo.

Rupert Lewin's 700BHP 996 GT2-R is always a centre of attention in Class One, winning the opening race at Oulton. In race two Lewin lost out to the new 997 of Paul Hogarth who gave the model its first win in Porsche Club racing.

AT Snetterton in race three Lewin again used the power of his 996 to hold off John Gaw, while in the one-hour race the next day series sponsor Jim Geddie took his first win in the series sharing his 997 with hotshoe Sean Edwards.

Peter Morris continued his 2006 form with both Class Two wins at Oulton, then let Craig Wilkins use his 996 GT3 to win the class in the first race at Snetterton. The duo linked up to contest Sunday's longer race, but lost out to a superb drive from the back of the grid by Steve Rance.

Mike Johnson was dominant in Class Three at the season-opener, but in his absence at Snetterton James Fillingham took a double on his series debut, sharing with Zubin Randeria in the longer race.

Open qualifying is at 10.20, with the race at 14.00 on Sunday.
