Max achieved his best two Formula 3 results to date at Snetterton, with an 11th and 14th place finishes to demonstrate his and the teams continuing development in this incredibly competitive championship.
Max steadily improved his performance throughout Friday’s free practice sessions and going into Saturday’s first qualifying session, he was happy with his progress. The team had been working hard to find straight line speed and the gains made were very apparent as Max put his Lego Batman sponsored Dallara 17th on the grid for the first race.
The second session was even better with 14th fastest time in the half hour session and Max’s performances demonstrated his growing confidence;
“Two weeks ago in Bucharest I qualified 13th, but I was nearly 2 seconds slower than pole. This morning the difference was only 1 second and now the gap is down to just 6 tenths of a second so I’m really pleased with how it’s developing.”
The first race had all the excitement in the first few laps and Max took advantage of other driver’s problems to jump into 13th place at the end of the first lap and then over the next couple of laps he was up to 11th.
“I tried to get on the back of the group in front but they were a little too far ahead and towed themselves away from me. So I had a fairly lonely race with nobody catching me either.”
The positions remained the same until the chequered flag after 28 laps of racing. Max had finished 11th and gained another all-important signature on his race licence.
The second race saw Max start and finish in 14th place, but it certainly wasn’t incident free or as lonely as the first. At the first corner after the start Max had to take to the grass to avoid an incident with cars spinning around him. He managed to scramble back on but had lost a few places, ending the opening lap in 17th place.
Max was battling with Walter Grubmuller in front, but the pair were being slowed by Esteban Guerrieri in front of them. Eventually Grubmuller got past and next lap Max followed with a late dive down the inside at Russell Bend. With a couple of retirements as well, max was running in 14th place when the safety car had to be deployed.At the restart Max stayed on the tail of the pack in front and pulled away from his pursuers, holding 14th place to the chequered flag.
“That was OK” he said after the race, “I very nearly got taken out on the first lap, but after that it was a comfortable race. I got held up a lot early on and could still push hard at the end of the race. We’ve learned a lot this weekend and I’ve had my best results so far.”
Max now has 6 races under his belt and six signatures on his licence. That means he can now apply to upgrade to an International B licence and enter the Championship Class of the series. The next rounds are at the ultra-fast Monza race circuit in Italy on the 23rd and 24th June.
