Battling Harper Secures F1 Prize

Greg Harper put on a brave display to retain his championship lead in the Super One Renault Formula ICA national kart series on Sunday 3rd June. The 16-year-old from Workington was excluded from one of his two heats but fought back to finish fifth and second in the two finals at Scotland’s Larkhall circuit. As leader of the series after rounds five and six, Harper receives an invite from series sponsor Renault Sport UK to watch ING Renault F1 Team in action at official Formula One testing at Silverstone on Thursday, 21st June. After qualifying fifth, Harper kept his position at the end of heat one but was excluded from heat two as his kart exceeded the maximum width. “The rear track was one millimetre out so it was deemed as non-compliance,” said Harper. “I think it might have happened during the race by hitting a kerb too hard.”Undeterred, he battled through from 19th on the grid, steadily picking off drivers throughout the 18-lap final one to finish fifth. He commented: “We had the pace in the kart and I was quicker than most people out there. As it was a long race, it wasn’t too hard to get through the field and it was a good result.”Starting fifth for final two, Harper went into the lead before eventually losing out to Rob Foster (Sleaford) who had risen from seventh on the grid. Harper said: “I think Rob had fresher tyres than me and that counted over an 18-lap race but second place is good in terms of the championship for me.”The top three in the latest drivers’ standings all scored a total of 91 points in the two finals, with Foster finishing seventh in final one before his win in final two. He stays five points behind Harper in the championship and just one ahead of Sam Tordoff (Leeds) who won final one but could only manage seventh in final two after starting on pole position.Young driver Elliot Burton (Huntingdon) enjoyed his best weekend of the season finishing eighth and third. But it was a bad weekend for the double race-winner from PFI with Robert Foster-Jones only finishing 23rd and 17th.Female karter Linda Playfair (Longniddry) climbed from 17th on the grid to ninth in final one and improved to finish fifth in final two, her best result of the season. Charles Bonsey (Westcott) leaps from eighth to fourth in the championship with two top-four finishes, while Justin Edgar (Workington) is up two places to fourth after a podium finish in final one.The Junior MSA British Kart Championship will continue at five venues around the UK, with the next round at Shenington Circuit near Banbury, on 7th/8th July.Renault Formula ICA provisional championship standings:1st – Greg Harper, 274pts; 2nd – Rob Foster, 269pts; 3rd – Sam Tordoff, 268pts; 4th – Charles Bonsey, 257pts; 5th – Justin Edgar, 252pts; 6th – Raymie Eastwood, 174pts.
