Chamberlain Double As Leader Is Excluded

Jordan Chamberlain (Newport) took two wins to kickstart his challenge for the Super One Renault Formula JICA national kart series title on Sunday, 3rd June. The 14-year-old won rounds five and six at Scotland’s Larkhall circuit, with the second victory coming courtesy of a decision by the Clerk of the Course.Chamberlain convincingly won heat two to line up fifth on the grid, directly behind Jordan Lennox-Lamb (Bedford) with series leader Oliver Rowland (Penistone) on pole position for final one. Chamberlain quickly passed team-mate James Thorp (Sheffield) and then overtook Rowland, who felt he had engine problems, to assume the lead.He had a see-saw battle with Lennox-Lamb but pulled away in the closing stages to take his first win of the season. “The kart just seemed to get better as the race went on and with about four laps to go I got the lead I needed,” said Chamberlain.Starting from pole position in final two, Chamberlain kept the lead until a few spots of rain led to a small error that dropped him to fourth. Tom Grice (Basildon) and Rowland battled for the lead but succeeded in slowing each other down, allowing Chamberlain to storm through into the lead.Rowland and Grice then made contact with Grice spinning off to finish in 13th place and Rowland excluded for his part. His appeal against the decision was unsuccessful. The incident saw Thorp move into second place and at the final corner he nudged into Chamberlain to take the chequered flag. But the Clerk of the Course ruled Thorp had taken an unfair advantage from the contact and reversed the position of the top two. “I was quite happy with second place after some bad results earlier in the season but to get the win is an extra boost,” commented Chamberlain.Following Rowland’s exclusion, which he must count in the final drivers’ standings and not use as one of his two ‘dropped’ scores, Gary Thompson (Ireland) takes the lead in the series. Mechanical problems in timed qualifying and final one left him 28th on the grid for final two. An amazing drive saw him charge through to finish sixth as he becomes the first-ever Irish driver to lead the championship.Thompson leads Sam Jenkins (Bristol) by just two points, with Rowland now third. Tom Joyner (Braintree) and Shane Crosbie (Co Dublin) each drop one place to fourth and fifth respectively, with Lennox-Lamb completing the top six.The Junior MSA British Kart Championship will continue at five venues around the UK, with the next round at Shenington Circuit near Banbury, on 7th/8th July.Renault Formula JICA provisional championship standings:1st – Gary Thompson, 248pts; 2nd – Sam Jenkins, 246pts; 3rd – Oliver Rowland 241pts; 4th – Tom Joyner 239pts; 5th – Shane Crosbie 237pts; 6th Jordan Lennox-Lamb, 230pts.
