BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica has escaped serious injury after crashing heavily in yesterday’s Canadian Grand Prix. He will be released from hospital this morning, having sustained just a sprained ankle and a light concussion.

Kubica left the track on the run down to the hairpin, after making contact with the rear of Jarno Trulli's Toyota. The BMW Sauber became airborne, hitting a wall in the centre of circuit, before rolling to halt at the hairpin entry, with little more than its monocoque intact.

Kubica was extracted from the car and transferred to the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve’s medical centre, where he was able to speak with his manager. He was then airlifted to Sacre-Coeur hospital in Montreal by medical helicopter for further checks and is expected to be released on Monday.

"It seemed a terribly long time, even though it was only minutes before I got the information that Robert is conscious and able to talk," said BMW's Mario Theissen. "According to the first medical reports, Robert has escaped this very heavy accident relatively unscathed."

A decision regarding Kubica's participation in next weekend's United States Grand Prix will be taken at Indianapolis on Thursday.
