Classic circuit the challenge in two racesThe Apex Tubulars Porsche Club Championship visits Europe this coming weekend (June 16th / 17th) with the series regulars taking on the challenge of the famous Spa-Francorchamps Grand Prix circuit in Belgium. The championship points battle is presently closely poised, with Class One leader Mark McAleer tied on points with Neil Harvey from Class Three, and this weekend's two races will see both eager to score points and take the overall lead.
McAleer was in dominant form at the previous round at Silverstone, taking both wins and extending his run of wins till three, the Yorkshireman not having lost in his 968 since the first race at Snetterton in April. Class rival James Neal won the first three races, but had a fraught Silverstone, while Tom Segrue has often been the quickest driver in the class, but has been denied a win by a run of bad luck.
In Class Two wins in the opening two races and then some consistent finishes have seen Marcus Carniel's 911SC head the class, seven points ahead of Brian Robinson, who has shown some rapid late race pace. Ben Demetriou won both races at Silverstone and leaped to third in the Class Two points table, with Trevor Lewis, returning to racing this year after a lay off and rapid in the ex-Segrue 944 fourth.
Harvey won Class Three in the opening meeting of the year, but since then has been battling with rookie Mark Taylor and has only taken one more win. Having missed the season-opener at Oulton Park, Taylor has since taken three wins, and lies third in class behind the 944 of Dave Roberts.
The sweeping Spa circuit should let the Club racers really stretch the legs of their cars, and the meeting is already looking to be a highlight of this year's calendar - which later on features the Grand Prix layouts of the Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Donington Park circuits. With a race each day of the weekend, and qualifying on Friday, there is ample track time for everyone to get up to speed for some great racing.
