The sweeping and high-speed Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium hosts the Apex Tubulars Porsche Open series this coming weekend, June 16th / 17th, and the powerful Porsches will really show what they are capable of around the classic Grand Prix circuit over their two races.
The battle at the front will be between the Class One runners, with the powerful GT2s of Rupert Lewin, sharing with Markus Paltala this weekend, and Peter Fairbairn and Paul McLean taking on the newer, but less powerful 997 GT3s of racers such as George Brewster, Andrew Tate and Mike Donovan. Brewster will this weekend be out in the car usually campaigned by series sponsor Jim Geddie, who is forced to miss the meeting due to business commitments.
The GT2s are hugely powerful, Lewin's silver car producing around 700BHP, which should see him hard to match on the climb up from Eau Rouge, while the 997s are more nimble and should have the edge on the second half of the lap. Also in the mix at Spa will be the Class One 996s of Gerry Harrison and the car shared by John Gaw and Jean-Marc Rotsaert. The latter has shown real pace this season and was unlucky to be eliminated with a mechanical failure when running well at Snetterton.
Class Two is dominated by 996 GT3 models, and a well-driven 996 could be in contention this weekend. After missing Silverstone Pete Morris is back with his rapid 996, sharing with Craig Wilkins, who has gained pace with every outing. Steve Rance has shown real pace as he has got used to his 996, winning the class at Snetterton in a one-hour race from the back of the grid.
Class Three will be as entertaining as ever, Mark Chilton's 928 challenged by the 964 of John Fraser and the Jarman family 993.
