Mortimer leads British invasion at Spa

‘One of the greatest I’ve ever been in’ is how double winner Oly Mortimer summed up a thrilling second Mini Challenge race at the world-famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, as the Great & British Dunlop Motorsport Festival temporarily moved across the continent. The young Scotsman had just crossed the line ahead of Lee Pattison following a last-gasp move on the final lap, a thrilling finale to the thirty minutes of adrenaline pumped fury that preceded it.

In winning Mortimer rounded off a memorable day having raced to victory in the day’s earlier race and continuing his remarkable achievement of having won all seven Mini Challenge races so far this season.

In the Club class Gary Kounnis took the spoils in race one following a tremendous dice with Keith Issatt, and the pair found themselves on the podium again in race two alongside Nick Jones.

Austin Kinsella shrugged off a terrifying 150-mph+ accident in race one of the Dunlop Radical Enduro championship to take the win, alongside co-driver Richard Ince, in race two. The wheel on his SR8 Sports car collapsed as he raced along one of Spa’s straights but thankfully he was able to stop relatively safely. Norwegian driver Filip Berg-Nielsen won that race while the SR3 honours were shared; Barry Gates and Anthony Dunn victorious in race one with race two going the way of Phil Bailey and Bradley Ellis

Toby Newton was the first to taste victory in the Dunlop Radical Biduro championship with John Hewitt getting his third win of the year as the leading SR4 in race two.

The next round of the Great & British Dunlop Motorsport Festival takes place at Thruxton in Hampshire on July 21st/22nd
