Sutton tops Carrera Cup testing

Sutton tops Carrera Cup testing at Oulton ParkJames Sutton set the pace in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB during testing at Oulton Park today (Friday 22 June) in preparation for rounds nine and ten of the championship this weekend.Fresh from a double victory in the previous rounds at Croft, Sutton (Red Line Racing) topped the times in both test sessions on a day of wet and slippery conditions. It was an impressive performance from Sutton and bodes well for a weekend when the weather forecast suggests that at least one wet race is likely. “I think whatever the weather, the team will be in good shape,” said Sutton, who’s best time in the first session proved to be the fastest of the day.Leading the chase of Sutton was championship leader Steven Kane (Motorbase Performance), who was half a second slower in the morning but halved the gap in the afternoon times. “There’s no point in pushing to the limit in the wet,” said Kane. “I’m just getting the car how I like it. This is only the second time I’ve raced at Oulton Park,” he added.Tim Harvey (Red Line Racing) was third fastest in the generally slightly faster first session and actually set his time right at the end of the session when he made the bold decision to try slick tyres on the drying track. On his very last lap of the session Harvey went third fastest and would probably have gone even quicker given time for one more lap.The two leading pro-am drivers turned in mighty performances to end the day fourth and fifth fastest thanks to excellent runs in the first session. Nigel Rice made it three Red Line Racing cars in the top four, while Pete Osborne (Team O) posted his best performance to date to be fifth overall and second in pro-am. Rice had a trip through the gravel trap at Druids in the earlier session, while Osborne spun at Druids on what would have been a better lap. “Now I just need to do it in qualifying,” said Osborne. “But to be up there has made my weekend!”Sam Hancock (Motorbase Performance) was sixth fastest at the end of the day, but ran second fastest for much of the later session, while Nathan Freke was seventh in the Porsche Motorsport entry, and was a hugely impressive second fastest to Sutton in the second session. “I’m really pleased with that,” said Freke ahead of his Carrera Cup debut. “ But if I’d pushed any harder, I’d have gone off,” he admitted after a trip over the grass at Druids.Although he ended the day only eighth on the time sheets, Michael Caine (Team Parker Racing) was among the very quickest when the track was at its wettest, while Andy Britnell (Motorbase Performance) and Charles Bateman (Team Parker Racing) completed the top 10.Porsche Carrera Cup GB resultsDate: Friday 22 June 2007Venue: Oulton ParkEvent: Testing1 James Sutton Pro Red Line Racing 1m33.920s2 Steven Kane Pro Motorbase Performance 1m34.477s3 Tim Harvey Pro Red Line Racing 1m35.655s4 Nigel Rice Pro-am Red Line Racing 1m35.975s5 Pete Osborne Pro-am Team O 1m36.088s6 Sam Hancock Pro Motorbase Performance 1m36.138s7 Nathan Freke - Porsche Motorsport 1m36.262s8 Michael Caine Pro Team Parker Racing 1m36.266s9 Andy Britnell Pro-am Motorbase Performance 1m36.609s10 Charles Bateman Pro-am Team Parker Racing 1m37.636s11 Peter Morris Pro-am TWC/Willmott Racing 1m37.878s12 Gary Britnell Pro-am Motorbase Performance 1m40.020s13 Colin Willmott Pro-am TWC/Willmott Racing 1m40.329s14 Mark Stephenson Pro-am ABG Motorsport 1m40.497s
