Third podium on the trot for Jordan

For the third time in three race weekends, Mike Jordan scored a podium finish in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park (Cheshire) over the weekend of 23/34 June.Jordan's John Guest Speedfit-backed Honda Integra was right at the heart of the race action as changing weather conditions made for a difficult weekend at the challenging track. Third in the second race of the day keeps Mike at the head of the Independents' Trophy points after half of the season's 30 races. Team Eurotech lies second in the Independent Teams' Trophy.Jordan was seventh fastest in qualifying on Saturday during a session that was red-flagged early on after Tom Onslow-Cole crashed his BMW at Cascades. "That’s a good session," said Mike. "If you’re knocking on the door of the top six in this company, you’re doing alright," said the Team Eurotech racer. However, what might have been an even faster lap was spoilt when Mike caught a slower car in the Knickerbrook complex. In the opening race, Mike got squeezed onto the grass at Cascades on the opening lap and lost a couple of places, but fought back into eighth place. "It was quite an uneventful race, really," said Mike. A knock with the SEAT of Darren Turner left Jordan's Honda with slightly damaged steering and that cost him any chance of further progress. "The BTCC is so competitive that you cannot make up for the car not being perfect," he said.In the second race, a long safety car period followed a first lap accident, but Mike had a great start to grab fourth before the safety car came out. Then, at the restart he dived ahead of Mat Jackson to take third before another safety car period and clinch another podium finish.Into the final race, the Honda now had 27kg of success ballast and that would hurt its pace out of the slow corners. But it nearly all went wrong at the first corner when the leading cars clashed. "At the apex of Old Hall, Matt Neal was completely sideways in front of me." As that situation developed, Mike got tagged into a spin on the exit of the corner and ended up going backwards down the grass at about 90mph. "I almost gave up and waited for the bang, but then quickly decided I'd still got some work to do. Either by luck or supreme talent, and it was probably luck, I managed to get it going straight, and finally spun the front round and carried on! But I was on the wet grass for a long, long time."Having rejoined virtually at the back of the field, Mike drove flat out all the way to the flag, despite a damaged front spoiler, and was catching Matt Allison's SEAT at the finish in ninth place. "I just had to try and keep fighting," he said. "It was another good day for us and we got lots of live TV coverage." Mike was also wired for sound on the live TV coverage in a new experiment and was able to talk to TV commentators Ben Edwards and Tim Harvey during the race. "That was great; I'd quite happily have a mike in all the time."In addition to the race coverage, Mike and the team were featured in the regional news in the Granada ITV region during the Saturday evening news programme.
