The BTCC confirms that Fabrizio Giovanardi has been awarded an additional point for setting the equal fastest lap time as Mike Jordan, in round 14 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park on 24 June.
Giovanardi's extra championship point means the Italian is now leading the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Drivers Championship outright.
After two podium finishes at Oulton Park last weekend, the Vauxhall works driver was joint-leader with SEAT’s Jason Plato on 149 points. Giovanardi earned the extra point, however, by setting the equal fastest lap time with Mike Jordan in round 14 at the Cheshire circuit. This was initially overlooked by the championship’s computer.
“I am very happy to lead as it is a first for me,” said the multiple touring car champion. “It was strange before to be leader even though we were on the same points.
“Obviously it was much better after the second race at Oulton Park because I had a 12 point lead, but to head to Donington Park now with one point ahead will be good.”
The Italian’s tally is now 150 points exactly half way through the season.
