MAC - Hillclimb Drivers School

at Shelsley Walsh

The Midland Automobile Club held its first ever Hill Climb School at the World Famous Shelsley Walsh venue on the 26th June 2007, following ten successful years of their Sprint School at Curborough which will continue.

Chief Instructor Jim Robinson said “With the 99 year lease on Shelsley, more operating days became possible and we are pleased to have taken this opportunity. There were 36 entrants today and they have all gone home with big smiles on their faces”

Robinson, who has been a successful single seater and sports car competitor for many years, recruited only the very best to be his co-instructors. They were Martin Groves, twice and current British Hillclimb Champion and a fearsome competititor, Simon Durling, fourth in last years British Championship, smooth and stylish and in the top ten for many years, and Chris Merrick, seventh in last years British Championship equally stylish and also in the top ten for a long while.

These four judged Morgan driving Phillip Tisdall of Shipston-on-Stour as the top performing pupil and Porsche 911 mounted Andy Norris of Reading the most improved pupil.

Pupil Stephen Alexander of Bromsgrove, driving a Lotus Exige said “Today was well organised as every Shelsley event always is. Where else can you buy this level of hiilclimb knowledge and experience?”

The date for next years event is not fixed, but is also likely to be on a Tuesday at the same time of year. An announcement will be made later this year or early in 2008.
