Epton switches to Carrera Cup

Experienced single-seater racer David Epton today entered into a deal with reigning Porsche Carrera Cup GB champions Team Parker Racing for the remainder of the 2007 season, the agreement marking a full-time switch for the 26-year-old into saloon and sportscar racing.Following a recent meeting with team boss Stuart Parker at the squad’s headquarters near Desford in Leicestershire, the Preston-based sensation has chosen to place his single-seater aspirations on hold and will now concentrate instead on forging a successful career in saloons, the first step coming with the prestigious Porsche Carrera Cup GB.The announcement marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in David’s career and confidence is high he will adapt quickly from the 192bhp Formula Renault UK car he has campaigned most recently to the latest specification 400bhp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car which he will drive in Team Parker Racing colours.David’s first competitive outing in the category will come at Leicestershire’s Donington Park National Circuit on 14th/15th July in time for the start of the second half of the season, the 11th and 12th rounds of the 20-race campaign. Like Formula Renault UK, the Porsche series is a regular support category for the British Touring Car Championship.Aiming to hit the ground running, the 2005 Formula Palmer Audi Vice-Champion and Formula Renault UK front-runner has high hopes for his first outing in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB and is confident of a sparkling performance on his debut.“This deal signals the start of a new chapter for us, we’re very excited to be joining the Porsche Carrera Cup GB and especially with a team as successful as Team Parker Racing”, said David, “It’s an incredibly prestigious championship and one I’m very much looking forward to competing in. I can’t wait to join the grid!“Of course, being in Porsche means we remain on the BTCC support package which is of huge importance to our sponsors. The profile of the series is fantastic, the corporate hospitality in Porsche is second to none and the cars are obviously very identifiable to the general public which gives the championship incredibly broad appeal.”Team Parker Racing won the Porsche Carrera Cup GB driver and team titles in 2006, its third success in the series in four years, and with David’s arrival the squad will once again field three cars – the BAe Systems graduate accountant manager joining fellow ‘pro’ class racer Michael Caine and ‘pro-am’ class competitor Charles Bateman.Epton aims to follow reigning champion’s exampleAfter graduating into single-seaters in 2002, having previously enjoyed a successful karting career, David's first full season of Formula Renault UK action came the following year in the ultra-competitive series. His greatest single-seater success came in 2005 with a season in Formula Palmer Audi, David ending the campaign as Vice-Champion, tied on points at the top of the standings and only missing out on the title by virtue of one less race victory on count-back.Returning to Formula Renault UK in 2006 in time for the second meeting of the season, David underlined his ability as a quality racer with some excellent performances but a planned move up the single-seater ladder into European-level competition didn’t quite materialise this year due to a budget shortfall. With the huge cost of pursuing an international single-seater career proving ever more prohibitive (McLaren recently revealing it cost circa £5 million to progress Lewis Hamilton to F1), David is now bidding to follow the example set by reigning Porsche Carrera Cup GB Champion Damien Faulkner and multiple category race winner Danny Watts, both of whom have made highly successful transitions from single-seaters to saloons.David’s sponsors, which include Honeywell Aerospace, Universal Weather & Aviation Inc and Imperial Jet, are delighted to be continuing their long association with his racing career and the exciting change of direction. In addition, the former Hampshire resident is also working hard to secure additional backing ahead of his first test run with Team Parker Racing which is imminent.Driver Profile – David EptonAge: 26Date of Birth: 28th March 1981Born: HampshireLives: Preston, LancashireMarital Status: EngagedEducation: Yateley School; BA University of NottinghamOccupation: Graduate Accountant Manager at BAe SystemsSponsors: Honeywell Aerospace, Universal Weather & Aviation Inc, Imperial JetCareer History:2007:Formula Renault UK Championship – contested four races with best results of seventh position in both rounds five and six at Thruxton Circuit; named ‘Driver of the Day’ for his performance in round six2006:Formula Renault UK Championship – entered 18 of 20 rounds with a best result of fourth place at Thruxton Circuit during round six  2005:Formula Palmer Audi Championship – Vice-Champion with four wins, four poles, 10 podiums and three fastest race laps2004:Formula Renault UK Championship – entered 10 of 20 rounds; best result of ninth position at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit; named ‘Driver of the Day’ for round seven at Oulton Park Island Circuit2003:Formula Renault UK Championship – best results of seventh position at Oulton Park Island Circuit and 10th place at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit2002:Formula Renault UK Winter Series & selected Formula Ford races2001:ZIP Formula Ford Winter Championship – third overall1996-2001:Karting
