Shelsley Walsh hosted more action on the weekend of 30th June and 1st July with the Reg Phillips Memorial Trophy and the Vintage Meeting in association with the VSCC.
Despite more of this summers rain on Saturday times were down but there was no lack of sheer effort in the race for best times and class wins as conditions dried in the afternoon. Bill Hutchins of Kenilworth, Warwickshire, took Best Time of Day (BTD) in his Pilbeam MP58 racing car with a time of 31.02 seconds in the unlimited capacity class to take the Reg Phillips Trophy for the first time in just two attempts. Former Yarkhill, Herefordshire resident Andrew Platt won the up to 2 litre racing car class depite a disastrous first run when he failed to get more than a few yards off the start line. Local Teme Valley Formula Ford drivers Martin Jones (Tenbury Wells) and Keith “Bomber” Harris (Stockton-on-Teme) battled in their class with Jones the victor.
The Vintage meeting suffered early rain in practise that cleared to give almost ideal conditions in the afternoon and several class record fell. Notable was Carl Gray in the Hardy Special Mark II and he took the up to 1100cc pre-war racing car class record in the supercharged car. Astonishingly the last time the record was set was in 1984 by his own father driving the same car. Only at Shelsley Walsh could this happen.
Vintage BTD was Mac Hulbert driving the most famous of all cars associated with Shelsley Walsh, the ERA R4D driven by Raymond Mays and then Ken Wharton to so many historic victories at the classic hill. Mac completed his first run in a time of 34.09 seconds which was only 0.38 seconds slower than his pre-war car record.
More action returns to Shelsley Walsh on July 14th and 15th with a members meeting on the Saturday that includes a round of the Luffield MG Championship, and on the Sunday is the Shelsley Walsh Classic Meeting with classes for Sports Cars, Sports Racing and Racing cars from pre 1930 to 1980.
