17-19th August
Historic Shelsley Walsh in Worcestershire is already preparing for the three-day weekend of 17th, 18th & 19th August as entries arrive by the day. The oldest purpose made racing venue of all will host the 60th anniversary celebrations of the MSA British Hillclimb Championship. Every surviving champion has been invited and a large turnout of former winners is expected.
The three days are made up of practise for all on Friday, two rounds of the 2007 MSA British Hillclimb Championship on Saturday and the anniversary celebrations on Sunday. Many former champions and current top competitors will be taking special guest drives in unfamiliar cars during the Sunday celebrations. Five–times Champion Martyn Griffiths will be out in a racing E-type Jaguar, but the biggest surprise of all comes from the current fastest lady in the sport Sue Young, who gives up her 700 horsepower Gould for the HWM-Jaguar that belongs to veteran hillclimber Terry Grainger.
Sue, who broke her own Shelsley Walsh Ladies record twice in one day at the June Shelsley meeting will drive the historic 1950 car that was campaigned from new by Sir Stirling Moss and Lance Macklin in formula 2 races when it had an Alta engine. Fitted with the Jaguar engine as early as 1952 the car embarked on a successful sports car career when it often proved quicker than the works C-Types of the Jaguar factory.
But don’t expect Sue to ignore her ladies record as she will be competing on the Saturday in the family Gould and she is bound to have a new target in her sights!
Shelsley Walsh is AA signposted approximately 10 miles North West of Worcester. Admission each day is £12 on Friday and Saturday and £15 on Sunday and accompanied children under 16 go free.
