Impressive start for Metcalfe

Formula Renault UK race winner Jeremy Metcalfe signalled his intent to add more race victories to his 2007 tally at Donington Park National Circuit this weekend after setting the fastest time during the second of two sessions of pre-event testing at the 1.96-mile Leicestershire venue yesterday. The 19-year-old Loughborough University student, originally from Fleet in Hampshire, set a best lap of 1m 06.366 seconds (106.17mph) to head the times during this afternoon’s 45-minute session, just over a 10th of a second clear of his nearest rival and almost six 10ths of a second faster than his closest AKA Cobra team-mate.On combined times Jeremy’s best lap of the day was good enough for third position overall and the BillChaser-supported racer is confident he has the car and the pace to challenge for a brace of pole positions during round 11 and 12 qualifying on Saturday and podium results at the very least on Sunday as the second half of the season begins.Reflecting on the day’s action at his adopted home circuit, Jeremy said: “It’s been a good test, this morning we worked on the set-up and there were a few areas we needed to improve on which we did for the afternoon and everything felt much better. The car did feel good today overall so hopefully we look good for a strong weekend.“During the second session we were fast on both old and new tyres so we’re feeling pretty confident we’ve got good pace for qualifying and the races. It’d be nice to get a couple of poles on Saturday and that’s what I’m aiming for to give us the best possible chance to fight for more wins.”Metcalfe attracts attention of local ITV and BBCAs part of the build-up to this weekend’s action, local news crews from ITV Central News East and BBC East Midlands Today attended today’s pre-event Formula Renault UK test session at Donington Park in order to interview Jeremy on two fronts, the BRDC Rising Star speaking about his racing career and his education at Loughborough University. With an additional East Midlands link coming by way of AKA Cobra’s base in Bardon near Coalville, Jeremy’s story has proven to be one of great interest to local television news teams who are keenly keeping up with his progress, as proven by the interviews conducted today by ITV’s Dennis Coath and the BBC’s Natalie Jackson. Both interviews are scheduled to be broadcast during each channel’s early evening news slot tomorrow, Friday, 13th July – the ITV Central News East programme starting at 18.00 and the BBC East Midlands Today broadcast beginning at approximately 18.30.Qualifying for round 11 of the Formula Renault UK season will take place at 10.35 on Saturday, 14th July, with the round 12 session following at 15.15. Both of the weekend’s races – which will be broadcast live on digital satellite and cable subscription channel Setanta Sports 1 – are timetabled for Sunday, 15th July, at 10.40 and 16.10 respectively.Provisional 2007 Formula Renault UK Championship Standings (after Rd10)1st Dean Smith, 282pts; 2nd Duncan Tappy, 278pts; 7th Jeremy Metcalfe, 169pts
