World Series Formula Renault 3.5 - Hungaroring – Race 2

Red Devil Comtec made a winning return to the World Series Formula Renault 3.5 thanks to the performance of Alejandro Nuñez. Taking full advantage of his position on the reverse grid, the Spaniard went into the first corner in front before moving clear of runner-up Milos Pavlovic (Draco Racing). The ever-consistent Sebastian Vettel (Carlin Motorsport) finished third to extend his lead in the championship.

Lined up alongside polesitter Charlie Kimball (Victory Engineering) on the front row, Mikhail Aleshin (Carlin Motorsport) got away to the best start. But the Russian overdid it on the brakes and ended up spinning off at the first corner! Alejandro Nuñez outsmarted Kimball to take the lead. These two were followed by Milos Pavlovic, Giedo van der Garde, Julien Jousse, Sebastian Vettel, Ben Hanley, James Walker, Clivio Piccione, Fairuz Fauzy and Filipe Albuquerque. Kimball didn't complete the first lap, however, after he clashed with Salvador Duran.

17th on the start grid, Guillaume Moreau was up to 11th after just two laps. A lap later, Jaap van Lagen (Eurointernational) span off whilst trying to get past Alvaro Barba (Draco Racing). The Dutch driver's antics led to Davide Valsecchi (Epsilon Euskadi) joining him off the track: the safety car was called out as a result.

Racing resumed at the end of lap 7. Fairuz Fauzy was then hit by a problem, which forced to restart from the back of the field. Fauzy's misfortune launched Moreau into the top 10. Meanwhile, Julien Jousse and James Walker lost several places during the restart lap. While Nuñez and Pavlovic moved clear, Vettel moved up to third, taking advantage of a mistake by Van der Garde, who fell back to sixth behind Hanley and Piccione. The rest of the top ten featured Jousse, Albuquerque, Moreau and Walker.

Further back, Aleshin wowed the crowds as he impressively made his way up though the field. At the race's halfway stage, he was 14th behind Pippa Mann. A little overzealous, he clipped the rear of Pippa's car at the start of lap 16, sending the young Brit's car into a spin.

With four laps to go, Pavlovic, Vettel and Hanley were all tightly bunched, but none of the drivers were able to make a decisive move. However, Carlos Iaconelli (Pons Racing) fought right to the end to steal 12th spot from Xavier Maasen (Prema Power Team) at the death. The 11th position of Pasquale di Sabatino (GD Racing) also deserves a mention, as that is his best result of the season.

Also pursued by Alvaro Parente (Tech 1 Racing), in the end the fastest race lap went to Marco Bonanomi (RC Motorsport).

Alejandro Nuñez: «To be honest, I didn't think I had a chance of winning. I took a bit of gamble to take the lead at the first corner. After that, I was able to control the race and make sure of my first win.»

Milos Pavlovic: «I tried to get past Alejandro at the start of the race because I was a little bit quicker. But I could only really get past if he made a mistake. At the end of the race, I was more focused on holding on to second place.»

Sebastian Vettel: «On Thursday and Friday we weren't really where we would have liked to have been. I didn't manage a good lap in qualifying and so I only started on row six yesterday. Fortunately, I was able to move up the field thanks to a good race strategy, which meant I was well placed on the start grid today. Although the car was difficult to drive after the laps with the safety car, I managed to overtake Jousse and then hold off Hanley using the ‘push-to-pass' system.»
