One of UK motor sport’s most dramatic sights of the year will come around this Sunday (29 July) with the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship’s annual visit to the Snetterton circuit in Norfolk.
At one kilometre in length, Snetterton’s Revett Straight is the longest straight of any track in the UK and has a reputation for producing wheel-to-wheel action when the BTCC visits as the drivers in Britain’s premier race series jostle for position at close to 150mph.
BTCC Series Director Alan Gow says: “It’s a great spectacle not just in motor racing but sport in general, for both those on the spectator banks or watching the action on ITV1. The crowds travelling from across the region to Snetterton on Sunday are in for some thrilling action.”
Indeed, with the BTCC arguably at its closest and most competitive for more than a decade, the expectation is that Sunday’s three rounds will be among the most exciting this season.
Currently, SEAT driver Jason Plato leads the title race, but he is by no means safe, with Vauxhall’s Italian ace Fabrizio Giovanardi and reigning champion Matt Neal in his Team Halfords Honda heading the chasing drivers. Seven different drivers on the 24-strong grid have so far won races in 2007.
Gow adds: “Revett Straight is where races are won and lost. It’s not uncommon to see a pack of cars slipstreaming one another and then suddenly fan out across the track and draw alongside one another in an effort to gain position under braking into the following Esses.
“All the drivers know the importance of asserting themselves ahead of their rivals by the Esses because after there it’s very difficult to overtake before the start-finish line. There might be one final chance, under braking for the Russell chicane at the end of the lap, and this is another great spectating spot.
“If I had £20 spare, I’d be booking my ticket right now. I’m sure the public is in for plenty of action, controversy and excitement at Snetterton on Sunday. It’s going to be a great event.”
Ticket hotline 0870 950 9000. Admission for children aged 12 and under is FREE.
Included in the price is the hugely-popular Pit Lane Walkabout session on race day, when the public – including children – are invited to meet the BTCC’s drivers for autographs, photos and plenty of great give-aways.
