Mangold Tops Training in Air Race

MANGOLD TOPS TRAINING FOR LONDON RED BULL AIR RACELocal favourite Bonhomme in secondAmerican pilot Mike Mangold (Team Cobra/Edge 540) topped Friday's training session with a time of 1:27.56, ahead of local favourite Paul Bonhomme (Team Matador/Edge 540) and fellow American Kirby Chambliss (Team Red Bull/Edge 540).The pilots again faced strong winds reaching 21 knots as they manoeuvred through the Red Bull Air Race course, set up on the River Thames in front of London's O2 Arena.Mangold's excellent performance has made him a main challenger to the British pilots. Bonhomme, who won the last leg of the Red Bull World Series in Interlaken, Switzerland, leads the overall competition with 26 points, while fellow Brit Steve Jones led Thursday's training with a superb time of just 1:27.29.A total of twelve pilots will compete in the race this weekend, flying individually through the challenging aerial track at speeds of up to 400 km/h, enduring forces that can reach 10G, in a series of knock-out rounds.Qualifying takes place on Saturday 28 July at 2:45 pm local time and the race finals are on Sunday 29 July, beginning at 10 am local time.
