Gearbox problem denies Jordan victory

A gearbox failure cost Andrew Jordan victory in the fifth round of the Kumho MSA British Rallycross Championship at Knockhill on Sunday (5 August), but some quick thinking from the team ensured he scored enough points to retain his overall championship lead.Racing the 550bhp four-wheel drive Ford Focus built and run by the G-Tech team of former rallycross champion Will Gollop, 18-year old Andrew (Lichfield) was clearly the quickest driver at the event, but major gearbox problems cost him the chance to take maximum championship points. On a day of wet and slippery conditions, Andrew set the pace throughout the heats and won twice to ensure pole position for the Supercar final. He even had the luxury of using his third heat simply to scrub some fresh tyres ready for the finals. In the Supercar final he went side-by-side with title rival Ollie O'Donovan into the first corner, before fighting ahead and pulling away. However, the race was halted for a car in the gravel and restarted a few minutes later. Unfortunately, as the race re-started, Andrew was hit by major gearbox problems and had to cruise around to salvage fourth place. That result left him as a reserve for the all-important Super final, but some smart thinking by the team got him onto the grid to score some vital championship points. The first attempt at running the final was stopped after an accident and one of the cars was not able to take the re-start. That opened up an opportunity for one of the reserves to join the grid and Andrew's team had wisely kept his car in parc ferme with the driver ready to go, even though they knew that the gearbox was in a sorry state.Nevertheless, by being able to get onto the grid and limp slowly around one lap with the car jammed in first gear, Andrew scored some championship points that could be vital if the title contest goes down to the wire."I wasn't even sure if I could get the car to the grid, but the team did well to make it happen. Those points might come in very useful at the end of the season. We certainly had the pace to win today," said Andrew.Next stop for the Kumho MSA British Rallycross Championship is Lydden (Kent) on Monday 27 August.Andrew Jordan is supported by John Guest, Bill Gwynne Rally School and Pirtek.  Andrew is an MSA British Race Elite Driver.
