The Apex Tubulars Porsche Open Championship visits Brands Hatch this Saturday for one of the highlights of its season - the annual Bill Taylor Memorial Race that has been held at the Kent venue in recent seasons. The tight confines of the Indy circuit combined with a variety of Porsches and compulsory pit stops add up to a formula that provide one-hour of intense and exciting racing - with the rapid front runners picking their way through groups of cars engaged in their own class battles.
The theme of the 2007 season in the Open has been power versus handling - the ultra powerful 996 GT2 Rs against the latest 997 GT3 Cup cars and their superior handling. With 400BHP on tap the 997s are powerful racecars in their own right, and with the hugely developed 996 GT2 R of Rupert Lewin looking to be sidelined after a startline shunt at Silverstone, it will be the GT2 of Peter Fairbairn and Paul McLean that will be taking on the nimble newer cars.
Jim Geddie has been leading the 997 GT3 ranks, winning two one-hour races and an almost constant podium visitor. Andrew Tate and Tommy Dreelan will also be out in 997s while adding variety to Class One will be the classic 935 of John Griffiths and Peter Spooner.
Also in the mix will be the well-sorted 996 GT3 Cups from Class Two, Craig Wilkins sharing with rapid Porsche racer Pete Morris, and other cars currently entered for Mark Albutt, Henry Firman, and Ray Dias. Steve Rance has been a pace setter in the class in recent races - including a storming drive it he Snetterton one-hour race.
Class Three currently sees the 964 of John Fraser against the massed 993s of James Fillingham, Zubin Randeria, and the car shared by Peter and Rob Jarman.
A feature of the Bill Taylor is the handicap result, in addition to the outright winner, where some post race mathematics will see a hard driven car from any class emerge with victory in that category. Qualifying is scheduled for 09.55 on Saturday morning, with the one-hour race at 13.45.
