Eurotech Ascari fights back
David and Godfrey Jones drove a superb race in the Avon British GT Championship round at Silverstone yesterday (Sunday 12 August) to finish fourth after starting at the back of the grid. The Team Eurotech Ascari KZ1 was penalised for a minor issue in qualifying, but a mighty drive took them to fourth at the flag to keep their title bid firmly on track. "It was a 'take no prisoners' situation and they drove a great race," said team boss Mike Jordan. The problems started in qualifying when a rear wheel worked loose as Godfrey Jones was going for a time. He pitted with three minutes to go and the team tried to rectify the problem in time to get the car out again. However, with two minutes to go it was clear that work on the hub and replacement wheel would not be finished in time and so the team prepared to refit a wheel so that the car could go to parc ferme, as required by the regulations. The work was finished less a minute after the chequered flag first went out, but the regulations state that no work can be done once parc ferme is enforced. Barwell Motorsport immediately protested the Eurotech car. "I was gobsmacked with it," said Jordan. "We were trying to put the wheel back on so we could get the car to parc ferme. If we hadn't fitted the wheel we'd have been penalised for not going to parc ferme." The Ascari was sent to the back of the grid and the team was fined £250. However, Jordan appealed that decision and the fine was later cancelled and his appeal fee returned."I'm not hiding from the fact that we worked on the car for a maximum of a minute after the flag. But there's no way in the world I would ever consider protesting another team on that basis," said Jordan. "I think it's a sad and pathetic thing to do."Starting from the back of the grid the Joneses drove a superb race to finish fourth, despite an early stop/go penalty, and maintained their challenge for the title. Now, the teams will switch to Thruxton, a track that perfectly suits the bravery, commitment and car control that typifies the driving of David and Godfrey Jones. "It's all to play for," says Jordan. "In 14 years of running their cars, I've never seen them so motivated. It's going to make the rest of the championship particularly entertaining!"
