Jordan robbed of win at Brands
Mike Jordan was robbed of victory in round 24 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch (Sunday 19 August), when he was knocked out of the lead by championship contender Fabrizio Giovanardi. The Italian was later fined and awarded penalty points on his licence for his error, but that did not bring back the race win that Jordan was heading for when he was knocked off the track at Paddock Hill Bend. "I was incandescent with rage," said Jordan. "Our car was easily good enough to win and I was absolutely livid. It was a stupid thing for him to do."In a weekend of high drama in the BTCC, including a huge 11-car accident in the opening race, the John Guest-backed Team Eurotech Honda Integra was right on the pace all weekend and was set for victory in the third race when Giovanardi missed his braking point and torpedoed the Honda out of the lead. Having qualified tenth on Saturday, Jordan did well to avoid the massive accident that decimated the field on the opening lap of the first race as the pack rushed up the hill towards Druids. Jordan jinked to the left and got cleanly through as a chain reaction accident started when Mat Jackson spun his BMW. "I made the right judgment. I saw Jackson start to lose it at Paddock and was fairly convinced that the left of the track was the best way to go."When the race was re-started, nine cars were missing and Jordan was battling with Gordon Shedden and Adam Jones for seventh place. When Jones and Shedden touched and ran wide at Graham Hill Bend, Jordan saw his chance to grab seventh place. He went to the far left of the track onto the straight and was going considerably faster than the other cars when Shedden came across and the cars clashed. "I couldn't have given him any more room and I was going 10mph faster," said a frustrated Jordan. He had to pit for a replacement wheel and finished 13th.The track was drying as the cars lined up for race two and Mike pitted from the green flag lap to put slicks on the back, having already put slicks on the front. He soon made up a lot of ground to finish fifth, but had too much understeer to go after the fourth placed cars. The grid draw for the third race put Jordan on the front row of the grid and he made a perfect start to lead into the first corner. "I was relatively cautious on the first lap to bring the rear tyres in and the car was unbelievably good. I've never had the car so good round Clearways ands that's the key to the lap at Brands. I was totally confident in the car and it was good enough to win. We did everything right." He also set the overall fastest race lap.Unfortunately, as Jordan led the race live on ITV1, Giovanardi made a big mistake going into Paddock. "He said he missed his braking point," said Mike after the Vauxhall cannoned into the side of the Honda and spun it onto the grass. By the time Mike recovered, he was right down the order and although he battled back to eighth, the victory had gone. "He was full of apology afterwards and said he wasn't trying to overtake, but that didn't get us our win back."Now the Team Eurotech crew will focus on the next three races at Knockhill on 1/2 September for the penultimate weekend of the BTCC season.
