Jordan takes Independents lead
Mike Jordan moved back into the lead of Independents' Trophy in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Knockhill (Fife) over the weekend (1/2 September). The John Guest-backed Team Eurotech Honda Integra was right in the forefront of the action all weekend, with a fourth, a fifth and an eighth place in the three races. Mike now leads the Independents' Trophy by just three points from Colin Turkington heading into the six-week break before the final three races of the season at Thruxton (13/14 October)."I'm well pleased with the weekend," he said. "We didn't quite have the car to win races, but to finish between title contenders Jason Plato and Fabrizio Giovanardi in the third race on live TV was a good result."Saturday started with a problem that cost them valuable time in free practice when a stone cut the water pump belt. The team engineers worked hard to replace the belt, but they lost important track time and that left Mike on the back foot for the rest of the day. "We were certainly playing catch up, so to qualify sixth fastest was okay."In the first race, Jordan was squeezed back two places in the first corner scrabble, but then settled on the back of a five-car train contesting third place. He did incredibly well to avoid hitting Tom Chilton's Vauxhall Vectra when it was almost sideways across the track in front of him at Carlube Corner and Mike then gained another place when Tom Onslow-Cole tipped Giovanardi off the track. Having just beat Giovanardi to the line, Mike then moved up to fifth in the result was Onslow-Cole was penalised.Race two netted eighth place, once again racing in a pack of six cars battling for third place, and that proved the best place to finish as Mike was rewarded with pole position for the final race of the day.Jordan led the first four laps in front of the live ITV1 cameras, but knew that the pace of the Halfords Honda Civics of Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden was just too strong. Unfortunately, as Shedden dived ahead Mike was forced off line and that allowed Plato to grab a place as well. "For the first third of the races I was struggling to get heat into the tyres and then for the rest of the races the car was stunningly good."With the car working well, Mike was able to fend off a persistent challenge from Giovanardi and make certain of fourth place. "We improved the car every time we went out and were getting it nearer and nearer its sweet spot," he said after another strong day.
