REACHING FEVER PITCH
With the destiny of all the Great & British Dunlop Motorsport Festival championship titles all up for grabs then this weekend’s penultimate meeting of the 2007 campaign, at the Pembrey circuit in South Wales (Sep 22nd/23rd), could go a long way into determining where the silver will go at season end.
Oly Mortimer returned to winning ways at the last round and continues to lead the overall Mini Challenge championship yet Club class driver Jenny Ryan is in a very rich vein of form and points-wise is within touching distance of her Cooper S rival.
Radical SR8 Sports Car drivers Austin Reynolds and Richard Ince enjoyed mixed fortunes at Croft a few weeks ago but they’re still looking good and have a healthy lead in the Dunlop Radical Enduro championship standings. Derek Johnston is their nearest challenger while Radical SR3 driver Phil Bailey is also in with a chance of the crown but should results go their way then Ince and Kinsella will be crowned champions for 2007.
It’s a lot tighter in the Dunlop Radical Biduro championship with seven drivers still in with a shout of the title. Realistically though it should be a straightforward shoot-out between series leader John Hewitt and young gun Toby Newton for the crown.
The Dunlop Sport MAXX Cup is also part of the package for the fifth time this year and the man of the moment is Martin Wallbank who arrives at Pembrey on the back of a winning streak having dominated the racing at both Donington Park and Croft. It’s hoped the series will be established as an accessible feeder for the British Touring car championship.
Another feeder-type series is the PlayStation Ginetta Junior championship. Some of the hottest fourteen-to-sixteen year old racing prospects in the British Isles are taking part in this championship and arrive at Pembrey on the back of some controversial but exciting racing at Croft. Nigel Moore is continuing to lead the 2007 campaign.
Also on the bill are the Powertec Radical Challenge and BARC Westfield Sportscar series plus the Mini Se7en and Mini Miglia championships. The racing gets underway at 1645 on Saturday with the main bulk of the action, taking place on Sunday beginning at midday.
The entertainment begins on Friday with the EVO Active track day, a perfect opportunity for motorists to take their cars around a circuit away from the watchful eye of speed cameras and traffic police. This popular scheme is sold out for this weekend.
