Brands Hatch hosts the final two rounds of the Apex Tubulars Porsche Open series this weekend, September 22nd and 23rd, the regular runners combining with the Porsche Club Championship to provide a 40-plus field of Porsches on the supporting bill to the prestigious World Touring Car Championship. With the front of the Open grid seeing a battle between powerful 935 and 993 GT2 cars, and the newer and more nimble 997 GT3 racing models, the racing should provide great entertainment for the anticipated large crowds.
Richard Chamberlain's orange 935 is always quick and will be hard to beat for pole position, with the GT2 shared by Paul McLean and Peter Fairbairn usually rapid at Brands Hatch. John Griffiths will be sharing his 935 with the rapid Mark Ticehurst for the weekend, with 997s for series sponsor Jim Geddie, race winner Paul Hogarth and Tommy Dreelan.
Class Two belongs to the 996 GT3 Cup cars, and is the only category in the Porsche Open to score points, Steve Rance looking a sure bet to seal the class win and the prize of a one-off Porsche Carrera Cup GB drive in 2008. Eight other 996 GT3s will be out to deny him another brace of wins, with Paul Winter, Mark Albutt and Robin Clark in the thick of the action.
Mark Chilton has been setting the pace in Class Three this season, his 928 GTS also providing a very different looking car for the Porsche Open grid, and for the season finale he is joined by 928s driven by Tim Bryan and Adrian Clark. Zubin Randeria will provide stiff opposition, having already won at Brands Hatch earlier in the year.
There will be two 30-minute qualifying sessions for all competitors on Friday, September 21st, with the first 30-minute race at 14.15 Saturday, and the final round on Sunday at 17.05.
