Evans jnr heads to McRae Stages

Evans jnr heads to Scotland for Colin McRae Stages as Fiesta Sporting Trophy joins in tribute to world rally champion

The tragic loss of former world rally champion Colin McRae in a helicopter accident will be on the minds of competitors taking part in the rally which bears his name this weekend.

And as a tribute, competitors will be looking to emulate his skill, determination and success in the Perth-based event which gets underway on Saturday (September 29).

Among these will be rising Welsh rally driver Elfyn Evans who currently lies third overall in the Fiesta Sporting Trophy – in what is proving to be a successful first season for the rookie in this ultra-competitive championship.

“Colin was an inspiration to so many young drivers and I know that we will all want to honour his memory on the event,’’ said Elfyn who is in his first full year of rallying.

The 18 year old will be looking to consolidate his championship position – currently he lies an impressive third overall The Sun Virgin Money Fiesta which is prepared by the family business – Gwyndaf Evans Motors in Dolgellau.

“We have just two rounds remaining and I really want to end the season on a high so we will be looking to be on the pace from the first stage,’’ said Elfyn who is co-driven by Richard Edwards, last year’s winning co-driver.

The crews will face four stages of high speed action covering 45 competitive miles before the finish back in Perth on Saturday afternoon.

In addition to The Sun and Virigin Money, Elfyn is also backed by Mile End Service Station, Garwood Motorsport Services, Trawsdir Caravan and Camping Park and the Trefeddian Hotel at Aberdyfi. The car has been built and prepared by Gwyndaf Evans in Dolgellau.
