Great & British Nears Climax

High-speed drama was the order of the day for the many fans that braved the wet conditions of the Great & British Dunlop Motorsport Festival at the Pembrey circuit in South Wales. Those who came looking for action and excitement were not let down during a race packed weekend of entertainment. It was the penultimate meeting of the season but with none of the core championship titles being won it means it’s all to play for at the campaign closer at Brands Hatch in a fortnight’s time.

There’s a new leader at the top of the Mini Challenge championship as Oly Mortimer suffered a terrible weekend points wise. The Scot, who’s led the 2007 series from day one, gambled on a wet tyre during qualifying but the decision backfired when the expected rain didn’t fall and he was forced to race from a lowly grid position. A best position of sixth in the third and final race of the weekend was the best he could muster in his Cooper S. Jenny Ryan is now leading the way after guiding her Club class Mini to two seconds and a third as she looks to keep the Mini Challenge title on the Western side of the Irish Sea following Gareth Nixon’s triumph last year.

Radical SR8 Sports Car drivers Austin Reynolds and Richard Ince are still the leading pair in the Dunlop Radical Enduro championship standings, roaring to a win in race two after they’d worked themselves up from sixth place to finish second in race one. Derek Johnston and Stuart Moseley won race one and then in a thrilling finale to race two, Moseley, who was trailing Ince by a little over four seconds as they began the final lap, made an unbelievable charge yet was denied by the chequered flag, finishing half a second behind his rival. Meanwhile Anthony Dunn and Barry Gates finished first and second in the SR3 category and as a result have catapulted to the top of their class.

It’s still very tight in the Dunlop Radical Biduro championship with John Hewitt’s lead reduced to thirteen points by Toby Newton yet both drivers were off the pace in both races, which were won by Ross Allen and Rob Wheldon respectively.

Martin Wallbank, who won both races to continue his winning streak, once again dominated the Dunlop Sport MAXX Cup. There were also class wins for Simon Shaw, Darelle Wilson and Paul Lund.

Nigel Moore continued his dominance of the PlayStation Ginetta Junior championship. He won both races around the Welsh circuit and has now extended his overall advantage to sixty-six points over Chris Clayton. The youngsters have still got four races to in their campaign but Moore is now poised to wrap up the title in a fortnight’s time, where the final Great & British Dunlop Motorsport Festival of 2007 will be held, on October 7th.
