Team Avalon unveil Dakar plans

TeamAvalon HEROES/LEGEND 2008 (Paris - Dakar Rally)

"An opportunity has arisen to participate & complete (hopefully) in the trip of a lifetime."

Ever since the infamous Paris - Dakar race was instigated in 1978, it has held a unique fascination for like minded people throughout the world. For most people it will remain a dream or at best a fascinating TV programme.

However the old adage of being in the right place at the right time certainly comes true. An evening with Charley Boorman and Patsy Quick rekindled the fire and then we found out about Heroes/Legend.

Heroes Legend, created by Hubert Auriol, is a team competition that follows faithfully the original North Africa to Dakar in Senegal. The Paris-Dakar of 2008 is now a factory team event backed by major international conglomerates that spend millions on their team and riders.

This has pushed out the 'small' team, lone riders and consequently the spirit and gives an opportunity to the people without bottomless pockets.

A team of six motorcycles are planning to participate in 2008 under the banner of TeamAvalon. Leading the team will be Michael Farwell, owner of The Avalon Hotel & Bar and well known motorcycle fanatic.

Other team members include:

Tat - Electrician & long term biker.

Archi - National committee member of MAG & fully trained paramedic.

Thumper - Keen motorcyclist and fully trained mechanic.

The Hairy BikersThe two final team members will probably be known to you under another name - The Hairy Bikers. Yes, Si King and Dave Myers will be integral and fully participating members of TeamAvalon.

The Task To complete the Heroes Legend 2008. Sounds easy doesn't it, but there is a lot to do before then.

CharitiesWe have picked two well known charities with both local and international connections.

The local charity will be the R.N.L.I - First started in 1824 by Sir William Hillary, the R.N.L.I dedicates itself to making the coastal areas of the British Isles a safer place for the local population and indeed anybody in distress at sea.

Our second charity is Riders for Health - an organisation that raises money for motorcycle transportation for health workers in Africa.

In trying to raise money for these charities along with awareness of their work we are looking for sponsorship for TeamAvalon. Taking part in this challenge is not going to be cheap. The motorcycles alone cost in the region of £12,000 and the entry fee for the event is over £5,000 per person. Having said that Si and Dave are already sponsored by BMW so that is two bikes less to purchase.

What are the advantages of being a sponsor for TeamAvalon? You will be supporting two internationally know charities with the confidence of knowing your money is being used wisely and going straight towards buying equipment that will directly benefit the recipients.

The profile of your company will be raised both locally and nationally through the media with events planned by TeamAvalon. The Hairy Bikers are also planning to travel with a film crew to record the whole event with a view to making a DVD and sell the end result to a broadcaster.

Your donation or sponsorship money can be written off as a legitimate business expense.

How much money should I give?As much or as little as you like. Every penny will be gratefully received and used in the most efficient manner it can. Your product or service will be promoted at every opportunity.

We anticipate a large amount of media interest over the coming months so an early donation would be advisable so to be 'in at the start'.
