Aspiring racer is close to stardom

London’s Simon Triglia has clinched the final place in the National Final of Vauxhall’s VXR Racing Driver of the Year competition, bringing him one step closer to becoming the UK’s next motorsport hero.Triglia cancelled the holiday of a lifetime to attend London’s Semi-Final and now takes the place of Sunday’s provisional finalist, who subsequently did not meet the competition’s entry conditions.Having finished second in the evening Grand Prix on Sunday, Triglia was euphoric to find out that he is now through to the boot camp-style Grand Final, keeping him in the running to win a fully-funded race seat in the 2008 Dunlop Sports Maxx Production Car Cup. “I am over the moon to be in the final, I postponed my holiday to Florida to take part, so I am ecstatic,” said the fleet manager from North Action, London. “I went into the Grand Prix believing that I could win, I was frustrated that I did not start from pole, but that doesn’t matter now!“I am going to be training hard for the boot camp. My brother is great at karting too, so he can help me develop my driving techniques further. Racing drivers have to be really fit, so I will be at the gym at least three times a week! It is such a great prize and winning it would be such a dream come true, so I am going to do everything I can to be in perfect condition for the final.” In the Grand Final all 12 competitors will be put through their paces, physically and mentally, by the VX Racing team. The finalists will graduate from karts to cars for on-track lessons with driving experts, but only one can win the coveted prize and the chance to be the UK’s newest racing driver.“Vauxhall aims to find a true racing star,” said Richard Hughes, Vauxhall’s Group Marketing Manager. “We are delighted to have Simon as a finalist, especially after the lengths he took to compete in the Semi-Finals. He shows real commitment to racing, which is a quality we are looking for.”
