Harry Vaulkhard is within reach of his dream birthday present – the Seat Cupra Class R championship title.
The 21-year-old currently leads the series, which supports the British Touring Car Championship, as he heads into the final two rounds at Thruxton in Hampshire this weekend (12-14 October) following an impressive season.
Vaulkhard has finished on the podium 14 times out of 18 races, won four times, set eight fastest laps and claimed one pole position.
All the Jesmond driver needs to do to be crowned champion is finish in the top three in race one and above fifth in the second race on his birthday on Sunday to give himself the ultimate present.
“It would be the best birthday present to win the championship,” Vaulkhard said. “It’s been a good season, I’ve led the championship for most of it.
“I’m fairly confident heading into the final rounds but there’s been a six-week break since I last competed so I’ve lost a little bit of my focus and my fitness. I want to win the title and I’d love to win a race on the day but I’m going to have to take it cautious as well so I don’t make any mistakes and I can get the results I need to win.”
Racing runs in the Vaulkhard family and Harry’s father, Nigel, is also in line to win a championship this year.
Nigel has been contesting the HSCC/HRSR Historic Racing Saloons Championship in 2007 in his classic Ford Mustang and goes into the final round at Silverstone a week later with a two-point advantage.
“It would be fantastic if we could both win a championship,” Harry said. “It’s difficult enough to win a championship as it is but for both of us to win in the same year it would just be magic and really memorable.”
Harry is currently sponsored by Bedsearcher, Orange Bus IT, Smuggling Duds, Gate 7, Creative Image, CustomCart.co.uk and MobiFi. He is looking for sponsorship for next season with competitive packages available.
