Dramatic season finish for Jordan

Mike Jordan ended the 2007 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season in dramatic style at Thruxton on Sunday (14 October). His stunning pace was not rewarded with the results that might have been, and a component failure led to a hefty accident in the final race of the season. For rounds 28, 29 and 30 of the championship, Jordan was battling for the prestigious Independents' Trophy as well as chasing overall podium finishes in the John Guest Honda Integra. Unfortunately, events worked against him and he ended the season third in the Independents. With teams working together to maximise slipstreaming in qualifying, Mike was eighth fastest in the Honda, and was very happy with the set-up having set his time running solo rather than getting an all-important tow from another car.In the opening race he was battling hard with the BMWs of Colin Turkington and Mat Jackson for eighth place when a front wishbone broke and sent the Honda limping to the pits. "I was coming through the field and it is highly probable that contact from Jackson's BMW damaged the wishbone," said Mike later. "We've never had one of those fail before."That meant starting from 21st place on the grid for race two and the result was a typically determined Jordan charge through to eighth place, right on the tail of seventh-placed Tom Coronel. "We'd got really good pace and were consistently the fastest car on the track in the second half of the race," he said. In race three, conscious of the overall championship battle, Mike gave room at the first corner as Alain Menu and Jason Plato clashed, and was then pushed wide over the gravel run-off area. However, he fought back and, having pulled off a great move around Tom Onslow-Cole under braking for the chicane, was annoyed to be spun round by contact from the BMW.With the tyres damaged, he pitted for a new set of tyres and rejoined the race and set the fastest overall race lap before the front left wishbone broke as he raced through the chicane. The car speared off into the tyre wall and, though unharmed, Mike was winded by the hefty impact.Photographs later showed the right front wheel turned hard left as the car headed for the barriers. "It's one of those situations you always dread, because you are just a passenger," said a frustrated Jordan. "Just as I turned right I felt something go."
